Community Benefits
Employment
The development will create around 220 new full and part-time jobs for the local community. Sainsbury’s was the first supermarket retailer to sign up to the Government’s Skills Pledge, committing us to offering all our colleagues the opportunity to gain a nationally recognised qualification. We were also the first ever food retailer to be awarded a gold accreditation from ‘Investors in People’ for our commitment to improve our business by investing in our colleagues
Local choice
We already know that residents of Ledbury and the surrounding villages are currently visiting places such as Hereford and Gloucester to do their main food shop. By offering better product choice we would save people travelling to neighbouring towns. The size of the proposed store has been carefully considered to give local residents the opportunity to stay in Ledbury for their main food shopping, saving travel time and fuel costs as well as reducing carbon emissions.
Local suppliers
Westons Cider has been operating since 1880 from its site in Much Marcle in Ledbury. It has been supplying Sainsbury’s for over 30 years and now employs nearly 200 people. Weston Cider produces various ciders including the classic Henry Westons Vintage and Westons Premium Organic. Sainsbury’s Ledbury would be proud to stock Westons Cider.
Fairtrade
We understand Fairtrade is important to the people of Ledbury, particularly since being awarded Fairtrade status in 2005. Sainsbury’s is now the world’s largest retailer of Fairtrade products, helping give producers a secure income and a more sustainable future.
